To become a soldier for his motherland, die and fight for its freedom was the greatest honor a person of any social standing could hope to attain. Brenton Montgomery, son of the Marquis of Ashbury, wanted nothing more but to follow in his father's footsteps and become a soldier; however, unlike his father he wished to serve more than just his standard term.
At fourteen Brenton headed off to Eton for his formal education. During his time at Eton, Brenton made a friend in the form of Elliot Dalton, a young man who was the product of a scandalous affair. Even though other students within Eton teased and bullied Elliot, Brenton never looked down on him and considered him more like a "brother" in the prestigious halls of Eton.
The two became fast friends over the four years they spent together; talking about their childhoods and reasons for becoming soldiers. As their schooling term was coming to an end, Elliot felt that his place was not amongst soldiers but with the talents of artists: painting, drawing, sculpting, etc. There was a short period of disquieting between the two that strained the relationship for a short time; but, Brenton accepted his friend's decision and encouraged him at every chance the young man was presented.
The time had come when they would truly stray to different paths; Elliot persuaded his brother to allow him to attend school at Cambridge to study in the arts; however, after his father bought his commission into the British army, Brenton remained at Eton until it was time for him to be stationed at his first post.
The Spanish War had erupted and Brenton was called into duty. This was the chance he wished for: to show his mettle in battle.
Years had passed since the war with Spain broke out, Brenton had been climbing the ranks of the military ladder and reached the rank of 'Captain.' However, due to heavily sustained damage to his leg he had been put on inactive duty until it had properly healed. During his downtime, Brenton learned through letters that his friend, Elliot, had graduated from Cambridge and was a highly fluent artist.
The two had been keeping in touch with each other over the years they were apart. Each mentioning their high achievements and ambitions. Once every so often, they had met personally and rekindled old times at Eton.
However, though Elliot's ambitions had changed years ago within the walls of Eton, Brenton has been steadfast in his dedication to the military life.
