After the Lord Kendrick and she departed ways, and her ire had calmed down from the earlier situation, she returned to her walk in the garden. Although what started at night was now taking place during the light of day, as the sun began to rise. Once again she was at peace with herself, as she moved along the cobbled stone path. Adorned in a gown of light gold, black lace trimmed hemline, sleeves and the less than modest neckline. Long dark hair left to fall freely, cascading over shoulders in waves. She abhorred the tight bun manner so fashionably worn by women, but then Carly was not cut from the same cloth; so to speak.
:In midst of trying to wake up Drake was on his way to the tavern for some warm breakfast. He had a long day ahead with training some of the men. His hand came up to run over the scruff on his face. Needing a shave was a understatement. Dressed causal without any of his gear though his sword as always was by his side. Fingers played with the hilt of it as he began to enter the gardens only to spot a woman walking toward him. His eyes studied her. A lady belonging to a house was very apparent.:
It was as she took to looking over the area, that she noticed the man not far ahead. A slight hesitation in steps as the night prior came rushing to the forefront of her mind. A genteel smile would display upon her lips, but she was guarded in her movements. If this one approached to put hands on, he'd find her ready, unlike the last one.
:Steps took him toward her only because she was in the way of which he was going. While he began to get closer he could see the uneasy look within her eyes. Being a knight trained you to pick up many things especially to read someone's face and body language. Though she smiled it seemed to be one forced. Stopping just short of her a nod was given:"Good morning My Lady. I do not think I have had the pleasure to meet you yet. I am Ser Drake Marret."
A respectful distance to be maintained, for when the man stopped, so did she. Her smile wasn't forced, at least she didn't mean for it to look so. "A good morning I bid you, Ser Marret." Offering a polite greeting in return. "No, I don't believe I've seen you before." Hands to fold before her. "I am Carlotta Basinstoke." Her eyes met that of Drakes, awaiting that tell tale sign when she spoke of her allegiance. It would be either distrust, or that of disgust, and she'd gotten use to that by now.
:He gave neither. A nod was given again to her.:" The pleasure is mine. I seem to be kept busy of late is most likely why we have not become acquainted before now. What brings you to the gardens this early? I would believe you would be resting like all of the rest.": Smiling he stayed his distance and sat down upon a rock that was near him. It wasn't everyday Drake was talkative. :
"Duties do tend to get into the way of socialization." Though her duties were to socialize, mingle with the Nobles from various houses. A glance around the area before looking back to him. "Actually, I'm out late." Light chuckle. "I came out here way before the sun rose to enjoy the peace the gardens tend to offer. Not to mention the exotic view and scents."
:He stood from the rock and brushed off his pants for a moment then looked to her again. Smiling:" Late night I see. I won't disturb your time to yourself then Lady Basinstoke. Hopefully we will meet again at some point."
To that she'd nod. "If you must away, then I bid you a fine day Ser Marret." She'd step aside to not bar his path if he chose to leave. "Though you were not disturbing me. If I wished to hide from humanity, I wouldn't do it in a garden where many are drawn." A polite bow of her head to him. "There's as much of a chance we will, as there is we won't."
:A tilt of his head as he began to laugh:" I guess you are right. To want to hide from others this would not be the place to go. How do you like it here? One who loves the sea I would think being on land for to long would bore you. ":He turned to the rock then sat back down again crossing his arms as he did:
She'd maintain her stance and the distance between them. He seemed pleasant enough, but she'd not take any chances. She did enjoy meeting others, learning who was aligned to which house and all. "The days are too hot, but the landscape makes it easy to forgive the weather. I spend not as much time at sea as I'd like to, duties don't allow it.: Head tilted slightly. "And what of you Ser Marret? How do you enjoy the lands?"
"I go where I am told.": That was answer enough in his eyes.:" What keeps you up so late if I may be so bold to ask?": He leaned back some and cleared his throat. Most who could not sleep had something on their mind or something happened to keep them awake:
"The enjoyment of the night, the peace it usually has to offer. It's the only time when I don't feel like I'm being judged, or have to maintain a status quo or have chaperones breathing down my neck." In other words she was enjoying the freedom of space, and lack of duty.
:He laughed then it turned into a smile:" I do understand the feeling.": He actually did. Standing back up he walked over toward her:"If you wish to walk more, I will walk with you until it comes to the point my stomach starts to eat itself or you tire of me.": Not that she needed or wanted him to but if she wanted company he was willing to give it which was rare for him.:
Harmless so far, and this set her a bit at ease, but not fully. Although to have company would be nice, else she'd be talking to the flowers again; although she has yet to be caught doing so. "I'd enjoy the walk." Better than standing in one place, feet get tired doing that. Then he spoke of food, and it was if he cued her stomach. She'd glance off to the side, perhaps it went un-noticed by him. "Which direction were you headed? Perhaps I could accompany you part way, then depart before you near your destination." She'd not impose.
:He stepped over closer to her and once next to her he pointed toward in front of him. He hadn't heard her stomach though if she had been up all night she must be hungry he thought:" I am going to eat some breakfast. Would you like to join me? Unless you have already eaten."
Slight shake of her head. "Nothing since dinner last night." Looking over at him. "I wouldn't wish to impose, good Ser, but the idea of food is quite compelling I must admit." Unsure if he had heard it or not, at least he let it slide if he did; brownie point. Slow would be her steps as they began to follow the path he chose.
"I would not have invited you My Lady if I did not want your company, now would I have?": He smiled as they walked toward the tavern. Fingers clasped behind his back. While passing other people he gave a slight nod to them. Looking straight ahead:" You have said more than once that people judge you. Ignore them. "
Side glance over at him. "I do, I assure you. It's not hard to do when you come to expect and accept it." Slight shrug. "In a way it does have benefits. It creates fear in some, so I don't have to deal with their prudish nature." Said in a tone of humor, not bitterness.
:Nodding he kept walking:" Most are prudes. They only hide behind titles and fake smiles to make themselves seem to good people. But we both know what goes on behind closed doors.":His hand came to her back to gently move her around some people that were stopped right in front of them, then returned behind his back:" I've yet to experience a lot of Kiel sadly"
She didn't jump nor try to pull away when she felt is hand, since it didn't linger beyond the simple action of guidance. A polite nod and genteel smile offered to those they passed. "I've enjoyed some of it so far. There's more than I'll be able to view in what time I have free of duties."
:He laughed again but shook his head:" Seems to be a never ending story at times. Though times like this make it worthwhile.": He glanced to her smirking then looked back in front of them. Once they entered the tavern he led her toward the smell of the food. Looking around to the empty tables he smiled:" Your choice My Lady"
To that she'd nod in understanding. "I know what you mean." And she missed the smirk. The understanding was the act of duty and being called away. "One near an open window to be preferred." The gentle breeze that would ebb through it would carry the scent of the gardens, and she liked that. -
:A simple nod was given. His boots moved over to where he felt was a good seat near the open window. A slight breeze was coming in. Waiting for her to sit he glanced to others in the room:
She'd chose the seat closest to the window, and for a moment would sit with her head tilted slightly and eyes closed. She was concentrating on the scent of the breeze, trying to avoid the smell of the food, but it wasn't working. It only made her hungrier. Eyes opened and she'd look over towards him. "Do you know a Ser Victor?" Curiously.
:Once she sat down so did he, across from her. His hands clasped one another while watching her.:" I do know him. We were very close.": When then servant stepped over he asked for only fruit:
She'd make the same request, then attention shifted to the man that sat across from her. "He was one I faced in a tournament." A glance towards the window. "He wasn't too happy when I won." Just casually stated.
:Nodding:" Yes, I know. Though to lose to anyone is upsetting. ": He leaned back some with a smirk on his face:" You fight well. I believe all women should know how to fight. The world is full of men who will take advantage of anyone who comes across weak.": He looked to his plate when it was brought back and placed in front of him and hers as well. Fingers took a hold of a few grapes, tossing them into his mouth:
She'd start off with the blueberries. "Yes, sadly there are a few of those, but they can be put into place." Peering up at him. "Not all wars are won upon a field of battle, sometimes they take place at a later time." Revenge can be sweet. "Though I believe you're not one that I should have to worry about trying to take advantage, am I correct in I disagreeumption Ser Marret?" Brow to rise slightly, munching on berries.
"You have nothing to fear from me. I was put on this earth to win battles, not start wars where there is no need. As far as you go or any other woman. I was taught respect. That will always stay with me.": He took a bite of a cherry then another grape:" Do you think I would be the kind of man who would take advances on a woman?"
That had her chuckling as she peeked up at him. "Ser Marret, looks can be deceiving. The one you'd expect to be the least to enact, is usually the one to do so. Please, I didn't mean to insult. I believe in being direct, call it lessons learned from past experiences." Though she'd not add recent. Taking another piece of fruit and popping it into her mouth.
:He smiled while watching her:" I believe in being bold and to the point is the only way to be My Lady. Why play games where none need be to played?": A brow furrowed though for she once again brought up something that hit a nerve with him:"You have had trouble while here with such a man?"
Looking up at him, she'd just smile. "Nothing to concern yourself with, I assure you, good Ser. No harm, no foul." She'd not make waves, there were already enough to rock a boat with recent troubles.
"Very well if you do not wish to talk about it then we won't.": It did concern him though. Popping another grape in his mouth he stared at her and the look on his face would show he was. If you find yourself in a place where you need help do not hesitate to find me. ": He was serious in his words.:
She'd just maintain that smile, something's were best left as sleeping dogs lying. Though could be used later, if need be by kicking said dog. His last comment had her looking up at him with a bit of surprise. "I appreciate that, Ser Marret. If a need arises, I'll keep that in mind." Then she would slightly grin. "Though usually when trouble finds me, it also assures I'm isolated, or distant from any to hear a cry for help. So I'm usually left to my own accord."
:Sighing he looked to her then to the servant who walked up pouring him some ale. Yeah it was early but the woman knew what he liked. Bringing the cup to his lips he took a drink then set it back down:" Your words bother me. I do wish you would tell me of what happened. I can read your eyes.": His hand came up to brush over his scruff chin while staring at her:" You do know eventually I will find out."
A pause in partaking of a cherry as she looked up at him. "Why are you so concerned over my treatment, Ser Marret? We've just met." She understood Lord Kendrick standing up for her, he witnessed her moment of humility. None new of the other incident, because it was her word against his, that of her chaperone, and six of the mans co-horts which were knights of the same house. She'd continue to eat the fruit, declining the Meade and instead requested water to drink.
"Why would I not be? You have mentioned more then once of treatment within your life and more so here. I find that to be disturbing from anyone. ": He took another drink though kept his eyes on her:" There are good men in the world Carlotta.": Yes, he called her by her name.:" We shall drop the subject if you wish. The offer though still stands."
"I'd prefer to drop the subject. Why ruin the beauty of the morning with talk of ill manners." Said with a smile as she looked up at him. She'd not correct him by the use of her name, it was her name after all. "Thank you for the offer." It was meant and a smile to seal her words. When the water was delivered, she'd take a drink then enjoy more fruit. "So tell me about yourself, Ser Marret. I don't believe I've heard of your house. How are you familiar with Lord Victor?"
:The subject was dropped and left alone for the time being.:" I became a squire for a Victor way back when only because his squire became sick. I stepped in and soon became close to the man. When he passed away I searched out the house. I was knighted and became Lord Victors right hand man so to speak. I handle some of his affairs and things. It is a honor to be a part of his house. ": He hoped he answered all of her questions for his past was a shaky one and not one he liked to talk about. Short version indeed:
"Quite the condensed life. What of your family?" He may have condensed it, but she'd urge a bit more. She was actively interested, so noted by the way she looked at him over the table as she outwardly relaxed upon her seat. Either it was the warmth of the sun through the window, in combination with the breeze, or the company that seemed to put her at ease.
:He laughed while taking another drink:" My father was a blacksmith. My mother died when I was young. My family is nothing royal.": Her skin and face was almost intoxicating when he looked to her. Drake barely spoke to anyone so this was very different. Ladies of the house had talked to him though he barely said anything. Taking another drink he set the cup down so the servant could refill it:
"I'm sorry for your loss. I couldn't imagine growing up without a mother." Offered with a sincere showing of empathy. Another sip of water, and more fruit as she listened and watched him speak. "I don't come from royal blood either, so we are similar in that fact." Said before popping a grape into her mouth.
"Now do tell of your family.": A slight look given to the servant with a thanks then the cup was returned to his lips. Setting it back down he grinned:" Only fair My Lady. "
That had her chuckling. "Touche' Ser Marret." Amused glint in chestnut colored eyes. "My father owns several tobacco plantations in London, and is also Barrister there."
:Nodding. He looked around because he felt eyes on them. Some of his men were eating and looked at them. One look was given and they then looked to their food. Dark eyes swayed back to her:" Plantations are a good means for money. Hard work as well. Do you miss being with your family?"
To that she'd nod. "Yes and no." The last remnants of her fruit eaten, and then a drink taken. Looking up and over at him. "Though I do miss my parents, more I worry over them. They're not spring chickens anymore. But I enjoy the life I've made for myself."
:Nodding again he finished off his drink then set it down:" I can understand that. Though I'm sure you'd wish to visit them."
That had her chuckling softly. "One day, perhaps. Though It's nothing I intend to do anytime soon."
:Grins while standing:" It has been a pleasure Lady Basinstoke, though I must attend to something's now before the morning grows late.": Dark eyes stared at her:" Remember my words and I do look forward to sitting with you again. ":
Slowly she'd stand. "I should return to see to my own duties. Thank you for the company and sharing of a meal." Offered with a genuine smile and polite tip of her head. "I'll remember them clearly and until we meet again, I bid you a good day."
:In midst of trying to wake up Drake was on his way to the tavern for some warm breakfast. He had a long day ahead with training some of the men. His hand came up to run over the scruff on his face.
