It is known that Carlotta Estelle Basinstoke was born March 8 in 1635 near Cork in Ireland, a bastard child born to her fathers wife’s cousin.
In some accounts the father was so fond of the girl that he had her dressed up as a boy so that he could keep her with him and claimed that he was training a boy as a lawyer’s clerk. This ruse didn’t work long and a scandal ensued that ruined the lawyer's practice and forced the lawyer, cousin, and Carlotta to leave and settle in the Westminister.
Carlotta’s father seems to have met with some success in his new location, as he was able to purchase a plantation from the proceeds he secured from his merchant endeavors. The plantation did well enough that it and Carlotta caught the attention of James Alderman, a Lord of dubious reputation at best.
In her attempt to escape the wedding that was being planned between her father and the Lord, she stowed away upon an outbound ship. Having hidden herself under the canvas of one of the dingies. Her luck continued to plumet downwards, when the ship she was on was over run by pirates. She had been taken captive and plans had been made for her to be the entertainment of the crew.
Before that could take place, again fate would shift with the tides. The ship she was taken captive by, was attacked by another group of pirates. They left carnage in their wake, the crew slaughtered one and all. Not that she felt sorry for any of them, after what they had intended to do with her, and flaunted in her face daily.
The Captain of the ship, a fiesty woman and one who made you feel insignificant in her presence, would be her savior from a fate worse than death, in her estimation. She was set free, allowed to remain upon the Captain's ship.
The Black Swan was her home for nearly a year, that was until the good Captain had claimed proprietyship of a particular group of Islands and built the Dockside Tavern and Inn. Now given a new lease on life, JD placed her at the helm of control there. She was to run the tavern, JD wishing to remain a silent benefactor, so none would place the establishment and the Pirate in the same thought of ownership. Unless of the higharchy and knowing differently first hand or of the ships crew.
Carlotta was a small woman by stature, standing only five foot five bare footed. The natural glow of that olive like complextion. That long black hair always brushed to a satiny soft shine. Those chestnut colored eyes were always reflective of that smiles warmth, or laughter sounded. So much life was evident in the woman who was on the run. None knew where she was, nor would she make any attempt to contact and inform them. Content in her life, the walls of noblity left far behind. Life was good again, new avenues to explore. She was already becoming quite the business woman, JD had taught her well and she quickly developed her own skills.
Her hobbies would now include experimentation in the kitchen, with the aid of the Black Swan's cook, Hank Zane. When his presence wasn't demanded below deck, he would be found at her side, in a fatherly fashion. She had been his assistant for the past year upon ship and they developed a close relationship. He was as proud of her as if she were his own child. Something he had not the priviledge of, or knowledge if ther was on out there somewhere. She adored him, a kind man with a golden heart. He was patient as a Saint, even when she made repetative mistakes.
Why couldn't her own father be that way, instead of demanding her to be something she wasn't. In youth, it was for her to act like a boy, even answering to the name Carl. When she could no longer hide that body that bloomed into womanhood, much to her father's chargin, that's when things changed yet again. Now she was a pawn in his political games. He should have never raised her in the world of males, she held their way of thinking and actions. Which is where she got the courage to run in the first place, then to survive her ordeal and now to move on with her life. He should be proud, he taught her well.
